5 Winter Outdoor Adventures in Spokane

Winter Outdoor Things To Do

Winter might be in full swing, but that doesn't mean you have to spend all of your time indoors. January through March is actually one of the best times to get out there and enjoy Washington's natural beauty. With beautiful mountain terrain and lots of snow, winter outdoor activities around Spokane are a big deal.

Looking for some ideas for fun winter outdoor activities to do this year? Here are five recommendations from our real estate agents:

  • Ice Skating
One of Spokane's most popular wintertime activities, there are ample opportunities for ice skating around town. However, the most unique and popular is the Numerica Skate Ribbon. This isn't your standard oval-shaped skating rink -- it's a long path with twists and turns. The outdoor path is 650' long and 19' wide. If you prefer indoor skating, Eagles Ice Arena is a great option as well.

  • Skiing And Snowboarding
Spokane is surrounded by five great ski resorts, so it's easy to see why skiing and snowboarding are such popular winter pastimes around here.
    • Mt. Spokane Ski & Snowboard Park - Located just 31 miles north of downtown, Mt. Spokane Ski & Snowboard Park has 52 runs, 7 lifts, and a terrain park.
    • Lookout Pass Ski And Recreation Area - 35 runs and 4 lifts highlight this fun ski destination located about 2 hours east of Spokane.
    • Silver Mountain Resort - This Idaho ski resort has five lifts plus a gondola that takes skiers up the mountain. The 6,300-foot mountain has 73 runs and is just a little over an hour east of Spokane.
    • Schweitzer Ski Resort - About 3,000 acres of well-maintained ski terrain can be found at this Idaho ski resort, just about 90 minutes from Spokane. It features 92 runs.
    • 49 Degrees North Mountain - This resort features more than 80 runs and has plenty of beginner trails, making it ideal for new skiers.

  • Cross-Country Skiing
Cross-country skiing is also an awesome winter activity and a good way to get in some exercise. Riverside State Park near downtown Spokane opens trails specifically for cross-country skiing when there are at least five inches of snow on the ground.

  • Snowshoeing
If you like the thought of skiing but want to do something that is of a slower pace, then you might enjoy snowshoeing. Snowshoes are outdoor footwear made specifically for walking on snow. It makes hiking around local trails easy and enjoyable and gives you the opportunity to take in breathtaking snow-covered views of the local scenery. There are many places for snowshoeing within driving distance of these Spokane homes for sale, including Headlamp Hike near Mt. Spokane and Newman Lake at McKenzie Conservation Area.

  • Snowbiking
Biking season doesn't have to end just because there is snow on the ground. Fat bikes are off-road bicycles with oversized tires that make them suitable for various types of terrain. You can easily ride a fat bike in two to three inches of snow, and it's a ton of fun. Rent them at North Division Bicycle, and then head out to your favorite trail.

Winter is a blast when you call the Spokane area home. Contact us today to schedule your home tour today.

Try These Winter Mood-Lifters

January Blues?

For a lot of people, January is the longest month. The hustle of the holidays is over. Visiting family and friends have returned home. The weather is, well, blah, especially for non-skiers/snowboarders, and it can seem dark. All. The. Time.

You can lift your spirits by employing a few little tricks:

Add a bouquet of fresh flowers to your dining table. Pick up some flowers in your favorite colors to adorn your dining room.

Light summer-scented candles. Scents such as coconut, lemon, tangerine, or light florals will boost your mood by reminding you that warmer weather will be here again soon.

Bring in some daylight. Daylight LED light bulbs mimic the natural light of the sun. With more of a blue light, these bulbs better mirror actual daylight.

Host a Hawaiian-themed party. Ask your guests to wear their brightest "Aloha" shirts and come ready to shine.

  • Order your supplies or check your local party supply store:
  • Keep your menu simple
    • For drinks, make it easy by serving homemade lemonade, both hard and non-alcoholic. See our blog post with great recipes from last summer HERE. Garnish with a lemon slice and a strawberry or two along with a colorful umbrella.
    • Make easy fruit kebabs with green and red grapes, blueberries, tangerine sections, pineapple chunks, and kiwi slices.
    • Speaking of kebabs, one of our favorite recipes is for baked Hawaiian chicken kebabs that take only 40 minutes from start to table. And you can do them in the oven! Get the recipe HERE.
    • Add some basmati or jasmine rice and a nice green salad with a light dressing, and you're good to go.
  • Music
    • Beach Boys, of course!

Fire up the BBQ. Not feeling the Hawaiian theme? Light the grill and cook up some burgers and dogs. Pair them with some potato salad and maybe some chips and salsa, and you'll be feeling the summertime vibe in no time.

Before you light your BBQ, make sure to remove all the snow and ice from around the grill and give it plenty of time to preheat. Grilling in colder weather takes longer, so keep the lid closed, and plan accordingly.

Don't let the winter blues take away your summertime joy. Recreate it until it's here again for real.
